South Africa: National youth service

Kenya: The Kenyan National Youth Service (NYS) was implemented immediately after independence and every year takes in over 2,500 youths, who are trained in vocational skills. The servicemen undertake major projects that are part of the national Development Plan. Vocational training under the NYS is carried out at some 14 schools, institutes and training centres throughout the country.

  • National Service-Learning Clearinghouse
    Originally an adjunct to the ERIC Clearinghouse on Service-Learning at the University of Minnesota, the Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse (NSLC) supports the service-learning community in higher education, kindergarten through grade twelve, community-based initiatives and tribal programs, as well as all others interested in strengthening schools and communities using service-learning techniques and methodologies. The Clearinghouse stands ready to assist with materials, references, referrals, and information. The Clearinghouse also maintains this website and an ever-growing library collection that is available to Learn and Serve America grantees. Department of Work, Community, and Family Education
  • Corporation for National Service -- offers Americans of all ages and backgrounds opportunities to serve their communities.
  • National Youth Leadership Council -- the sponsor of the USA's annual National Service-Learning Conference; provides professional development for educators and community leaders, offers youth leadership development through an annual leadership training program, and provides model programs, publications, and advocacy for public policy. (Note: this Council is not related to or affiliated with an organization called the "President's National Youth Leadership Council.") USA Freedom Corps
  • National Service Learning Partnership
  • National Association of Service and Conservation Corps -- the membership organisation for youth corps programs, aiming to strengthen the quality of existing youth corps programs and to promote the development of new ones
  • City Year part of the AmeriCorps National Service Network, is a nation-wide North American service program which unites young adults, ages 17 to 23, from diverse racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement. City Year has addresses in several states.
  • United Way of America National Youth Service (NYS) Initiative aims to give young people the structure and opportunities to begin a lifetime commitment of service to others.
