Moyes, Adrian, Volunteers in Development (London: Overseas Development Institute, Ltd., 1966). Reviews all aspects of programs which sponsor overseas service by young people and makes recommendations. Preiss, Jack J., Camp William James (Norwich, Vermont: Argo Books, 1978). Describes an attempt by Harvard and Dartmouth students, aided by Eugen Rosenstock- Huessy, in 1939-40 to launch a youth service involving young men and women from all walks of life. Rosenstock-Huessy, Eugen, Planetary Service (Norwich, Vermont: Argo Books, 1978). Originally published as Dienst auf dem Planeten (Stuttgart: W. Kohlhammer, 1965), this book makes a case for an international civilian youth service. The author argued for a work service corps in Germany as early as 1912 and took refuge in the United States in 1933. Here he was critical of the Civilian Conservation Corps for limiting itself to unemployed young men and was instrumental in founding Camp William James (see Preiss above). Shandler, David, National Service...or Service to the Nation? The Case for Civilian National Service (Centre for Policy Studies, Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, 1990). Examines the design, cost and impact of a civilian national service in South Africa. Sherraden, Michael W. and Donald J. Eberly, National Service: Social, Economic and Military Impacts (New York: Pergamon Press, 1982). Reviews the history and philosophy of national service, proposes a national service model for the United States, and uses research findings to examine the likely impact of national service on society, education, the economy, and those who serve. Special Senate Committee on Youth, YOUTH: A Plan of Action (Ottawa, 1986). The Committee, chaired by Sen. Jacques Hebert, recommends a Young Canadians' Community Service Program open to all Canadians aged 17-24 as a major part of a comprehensive youth policy.? | |
