These summaries are based on the reports submitted by delegates to the 4th Global Conference. Twenty of twenty-two nations provided reports. They illustrate the various rationales and designs of National Youth Service, all with the common feature of a period of civilian service by young people.

They also illustrate how the various nations are at different stages with National Youth Service, some having long-established programmes, while for others National Youth Service is relatively new or still under discussion. (This section includes expanded country updates for Argentina, Australia, Germany, India and the People's Republic of China using information taken from their main conference presentations, as their main presentations focused on detailing the NYS schemes they had outlined in their updates).
