INDIA - NATIONAL YOUTH PROJECT:
YOUTH ACTIVISTS' VIEWS

- Rajeev Bukralia, The Inspiration Courses, and
Madhusudan Das and Debajani Das, National Youth Project

The young Indian conference participants preceded their address with a Hindi song about justice and the elimination of national borders and racial, cultural and religious boundaries.

Rajeev said that the National Youth Project works nation-wide to promote national harmony: youth camps helping bring peace to disturbed regions. Young people can play a major part in fighting corruption and stemming the population increase in India. Work needs to be done to get young people into the frame of mind whereby they regard `service' as a natural part of their life. Rajeev recommends that all NYS schemes be free from political or other biases; that more countries participate in these conferences to help make the movement truly global; and that vocational training should go hand in hand with NYS, to ensure that when we ask young people to get involved in NYS, we do not forgot that they also have to earn a living.

Debajani welcomed the emphasis evident in most countries' NYS programmes and plans - that of encouraging men and women to participate. Female participation can help overcome stereotypes. Women contribute greatly to the prosperity of their countries, and to help them to continue to do so, training built into their NYS experiences should help make them effective activists to help tackle the problems of the future.

Madhusudan commented that India is a country with a multitude of different languages, religions and ways of life. While respecting these differences, NYS is a means of bringing people together and creating a national and international unity. "Social transformation will come through self transformation", and this includes self discipline, tolerance and yoga and working for the sake of others. The spirit of voluntarism ought therefore to be promoted.
