NYS EXPERIENCES IN GHANA
- Clement Totimeh, President, National Service Personnel Association (NASPA)
Clement said that after university, he had to go on to do National Service where he witnessed inhuman poverty in the rural community and a great gulf between the urban and rural areas. When he went to do his National Service for two years he hoped it would make him a better person and that it would be a new stage in his life. He believes that what he witnessed and experienced in those rural communities in which he served gave him greater understanding: "National Service has made me a better person".
Ghana is a melting pot both ethnically and socially, and has leadership problems - political instability, gender imbalance, greed and squalor have all been major problems - these can be combatted by working together. NYS in Ghana is representative of all groups in the country. It is important because it brings about a sense of unity. Clement has become a facilitator of democracy through what he has learnt and been taught through volunteering. NYS can redirect the energies of youth into positive areas. Successful NYS projects need good leadership, comprising free flow of information, maturity, endurance and tolerance.
